Today is a good day. I love history and especially exploring my heritage. My ancestors where partial slaves and slave holders. So today is an important day for me.
It's Keti Koto meaning Cut off the Chains.. Its the 150th anniversary of the ending of slavery. African people where being brought by boat to South and North America to work on plantations by different countries in Europe. Approximately 550000 people where being transported by the Netherlands in total more then 12 million African people where being traded. They were brought by hundreds at a time under horrible circumstances and at arrival the ship was prepared to return to Europe with harvest like sugar and cotton. It was big business at that time also known as the Golden age in NL.
After more then 200 years the NL were the last one to end the slavery in 1873. And today the victims are remembered and the ending is celebrated with lots of festivities in Suriname and the Netherlands. So today is deff a good day! Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows and especially if this still happens today. So let's take this moment to reflect on modern-day slavery like forced labor and sex trafficking and remind ourselves of the fact that everyone deserves Freedom.

Soraya
